Transportation in and Around Albuquerque
Albuquerque has two major airports: the Albuquerque International Sunport, which supports most business and commercial flights; and the Double Eagle II, which is primarily used by corporate, military and charter flights. From Albuquerque International Sunport, visitors to the city can hail a taxi, take a scheduled shuttle bus, or board the Rail Runner Express commuter train to the Alvarado Transportation Center in downtown Albuquerque.
As major cities go, Albuquerque has a well-developed bicycle network. Many trails and routes run through the city, including the newly unveiled Bicycle Boulevard on Silver Avenue. Albuquerque was also designed to be very “walkable,” ranked by Walk Score as the 28th most walkable city.
Albuquerque has a reputation for intense traffic, particularly the bottleneck locations around Interstate 25, Interstate 40, the diamond interchange at NM-423, and Central Avenue. While not as congested as the traffic in Los Angeles or Chicago, Albuquerque can still be an intimidating driving environment for visitors.
Fortunately, Albuquerque does have many alternate routes around the city, so drivers can avoid the interstate, especially during morning and evening rush hour, when congestion is at its peak. Crashes and other traffic incidents can cause frequent closures on I-40, which will divert traffic onto the lesser-used routes. As with many major metropolitan areas, it’s best to schedule a minimum of 30 minutes to get anywhere in the city if you are traveling by car.
