This 304-acre theme park first opened in 1976 as Marriott’s Great America, becoming part of the Six Flags family in 1984. Today, it covers 304 acres and features over 53 rides, including 16 roller coasters and 4 water rides. Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Illinois gathers over 2.9 million visitors every year — and there’s no better way to get there than with the help of Metropolitan Shuttle, the Official Charter Bus Partner of Six Flags. We’ve been helping organize transportation to parks like Six Flags Great America for years. We pride ourselves on making it easy and efficient, whether you’re going to the park with a few friends or for a big corporate event.
What’s so special about the roller coasters at Six Flags Great America? Let’s talk about the American Eagle, one of the classic American coasters. A wooden coaster made of Douglas Fir trees, this hand-painted ride is the largest double-racing wooden coaster in the world. It was a record-breaker when it was built, at 9,300 feet of track and a 147-foot drop. The American Eagle may be a classic, but it’s just as thrilling today as the day it was built.
But that’s not nearly all Six Flags Great America has to offer you once you get off the shuttle bus. If you get a thrill from heights, then get to the Dare Devil Dive, where you’ll strap in to be lifted 12 stories into the air and then drop 70 mph toward the ground like a skydiver. Or get vertical with Vertical Velocity, a 185-foot magnetic impulse coaster with a tower spike which sends you into a spiraling corkscrew. You’ll get vertical three times in this ride, and you’re unlikely to forget it. Still not enough for you? Brave the Demon, a looping coaster with a double corkscrew that will take you through three tunnels at over 6 Gs of force. And the thrills will only get bigger from there: in 2018, Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Illinois will unveil the world’s largest loop coaster.
Looking for something a bit more down to earth for your Six Flags adventure? No problem! Unleash your inner pirate on the Buccaneer Battle, a water-park ride where you aim your soaker guns broadsides at other aspiring sailors. You can chill out in the Columbia Carousel, swing back and forth on the high-flying River Rocker, or take a tour of the park at the Scenic Railway County Fair Station. And if you really do like heights, don’t miss the Sky Trek Tower, which will offer you a spectacular view of the park from 330 feet in the air.
Six Flags Great America makes a great destination in the summer, when you can enjoy all that the water park has to offer: from the kid-friendly Buccaneer Bay to the high-speed tunnels of Hurricane Mountain and Paradise Plunge.
