School bus rental in Philadelphia: what a real 2026 trip cost, and what a yellow bus is for
A nonprofit rented a school bus from us in Philadelphia on the first Wednesday in April for a day at the shore: a 9:30 AM pickup at 5701 Wynnefield Avenue, 65 miles down the Atlantic City Expressway to 801 Boardwalk, Boardwalk Hall, a 2:30 PM departure and a 4:30 PM arrival back in Wynnefield. Booked as a day rate for a trip outside the Philadelphia metro area, $1,250. That is the invoice, and it is the fastest way to understand what a yellow bus costs in Philadelphia and when it is the right vehicle.
Metropolitan Shuttle is a transportation management company that has arranged Philadelphia charter bus rental since 2001. We do not own the buses. We vet the school bus operators who do, confirm insurance and safety records before booking, and assign one coordinator who owns your trip start to finish.
A recent Philadelphia school bus trip and what it cost
| Trip | When | Passengers | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5701 Wynnefield Ave, Philadelphia, to 801 Boardwalk (Boardwalk Hall), Atlantic City, NJ, 9:30 AM pickup; 2:30 PM departure from Atlantic City for a 4:30 PM return | Wednesday, April 1, 2026 | Nonprofit group | $1,250 |
Price is per bus, driver included, Expressway tolls included; the $1,250 was the whole invoice.
Why $1,250. A local school bus charter in Philadelphia bills $125 to $145 an hour and lands at $600 to $725 for a five-hour field trip. This one left the metro area: seven hours and 130 miles, with the bus crossing the Walt Whitman Bridge and running the length of the Expressway twice, so it was booked as a day rate rather than against the hourly band. At $1,250 it was still the cheapest way to move a full group to Atlantic City and back: a coach on the same itinerary would have billed closer to the $1,750 a 40-passenger coach charged for a shore run this August. A school bus trades the restroom, the reclining seats and the luggage bays for the lowest cost per seat on the road.
How much does a school bus rental cost in Philadelphia?
Published 2026 rates for a school bus with driver in Philadelphia follow the national school bus band: $125 to $145 per hour, $600 to $725 for a five-hour charter. A field trip from a Center City or West Philadelphia school to the Franklin Institute, the Zoo or Independence Hall and back lands inside that band. Trips that leave the metro area, to the shore, Lancaster or Hershey, are booked as day rates, as the Atlantic City day was. Three things move the quote:
- Hours and miles. A five-hour local trip is the base. The Atlantic City day was seven hours and 130 miles and was priced as a day rate.
- The date. May and early June are field-trip season in Philadelphia and the buses sell out on weekdays. Book four to six weeks out for a spring date.
- Standby. A bus that waits at the venue bills the hours; a bus released and re-dispatched for the return sometimes prices lower, sometimes not. We work that out on the quote.
The Philadelphia charter bus rental hub has the full rate table by bus type.
What a school bus carries, and what it does not
- Up to 72 students on bench seats, or about 48 adults
- Roof hatches and windows; air conditioning on request, not on every bus
- No restroom, no reclining seats, no Wi-Fi, no underfloor bays; backpacks ride on laps or under seats
- Lift-equipped buses on request for students using wheelchairs
- Drivers hold a CDL with the passenger and school bus endorsements and clear the background checks Pennsylvania requires
The trade is simple. For a group of students on a day trip under two hours each way, nothing beats a yellow bus on price. For adults, for anything with luggage, or for a drive past two hours, a minibus or a coach is worth the step up.
Who rents school buses in Philadelphia
Schools and districts. Field trips to the Franklin Institute, the Zoo, the Academy of Natural Sciences, Independence Hall and Eastern State Penitentiary; team transport to games and meets. Schools can pay by purchase order and receive a certificate of insurance naming the district. See school and university bus rentals in Philadelphia.
Nonprofits, camps and youth programs. The Atlantic City day was a nonprofit. Summer camps, church youth groups and after-school programs book the same way.
Weddings and events. A yellow bus is the budget shuttle for a guest loop between a hotel and a venue, and some couples book it for the look.
Corporate and community events. Parking-lot shuttles, festival loops, volunteer days.
Other Philadelphia vehicles
